A bulk carrier flying the flag of Liberia was targeted by an unidentified projectile on Tuesday morning while passing through the Strait of Hormuz, near the coast of Oman.
According to Reuters, the projectile struck the ship’s engine room and caused a fire in the accommodation area.
Based on statements from maritime security sources, the ship’s crew was forced to abandon the vessel and one of the ship’s engineers remains missing.
The maritime risk management company “Vanguard” said the crew requested help to contain the fire. The Greek company operating the ship has, so far, not responded to the incident.
The incident comes as shipping security in the Strait of Hormuz remains fragile. A few hours earlier, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations Organization reported another maritime incident, about 20 nautical miles northeast of the Omani port of Khasab.
