An official UAE news agency reported that Hamad Saif Al-Shamsi, the country’s Attorney General, ordered the formation of a team to investigate the incident involving Flydubai Flight FZ1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv—an incident that led to the plane changing course and landing safely in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.

According to the statement, Flydubai reported that there was an “argument in the cockpit,” and the involvement of the company’s staff onboard resulted in securing the aircraft.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had previously said that the first officer stabbed the pilot with a knife and apparently intended to bring down the plane with its passengers on board.

The UAE Attorney General ordered that information and documents related to the incident be collected and that the possibility of its connection to any “terrorist activity or purpose,” as well as the possibility of prior planning or guidance, be examined.

The UAE’s judicial authorities have jurisdiction to investigate the incident due to the fact that the aircraft was registered in the country and flew under the flag of the United Arab Emirates, and the country’s laws regarding crimes committed on aircraft apply even if they occur outside the territory of the United Arab Emirates.
