Javad Hoseini, head of the Welfare Organization, on Sunday, 22 Shahrivar, at the Council meeting on the Elderly of South Khorasan, said: “At present, we have 10 million and 350 thousand elderly people in the country, who make up nearly 14 percent of the population, and given the high pace of aging, it is predicted that the share of Iran’s population aged over 60 will reach 31 percent by the year 1430.”

The head of the Welfare Organization announced: “Iranian society is in the stage of entering old age, but the speed of our aging is very high.”

Javad Hoseini also said that in proportion to the pace of aging, the necessary facilities, equipment, and programs do not exist in the country.

He also added: “Aging in our country has come to be accompanied by issues such as poverty, disability, loneliness, the lack of continuous formal and informal care, and the heavy burden of disease.”

Hoseini, stating that 62 percent of the country’s elderly are affected by at least one chronic disease, continued: “If we do not plan for this situation, a significant portion of society will spend the period of aging living with low quality.”
