🔸When the earth shakes: Seven devastating earthquakes in 2026
Is 2026 a special year in terms of earthquakes? At least so far, the number of very strong earthquakes is not unusual.
Based on the long-term average, around 15 earthquakes of magnitude 7 and above occur worldwide each year. By mid-August this year, ten earthquakes of this type have been recorded. But what draws attention are the devastating consequences of some of these earthquakes.
On June 24, Venezuela faced the deadliest earthquake disaster of the year so far, and with a significant difference compared to the past.
Just 39 seconds after an earthquake of magnitude 7.2, an even stronger quake of magnitude 7.5 occurred. Northern areas of the country and Caracas, Venezuela’s capital, were hit the hardest.
According to official figures, more than 6,300 people died in these two earthquakes. The consequences of this disaster for the country’s poor infrastructure have also been very severe.
