Warning: This report includes disturbing descriptions of an execution by lethal injection.

Since lethal injection was first used in Texas in 1982, a large portion of executions in the United States have been carried out using this method.

“The Death Penalty Information Center,” a non-profit think tank that does not take a position for or against the death penalty, says that over the past 50 years, out of a total of 1,683 executions, 64 have been accompanied by problems or execution failures, including 51 failed attempts at lethal injection.

The difficulties of carrying out these executions and protests against what some describe as inhumane behavior have led officials to consider alternative methods for killing convicted people.
