🔶 US says a disarmament process for Hamas could begin within 30 days
Jared Kushner, Donald Trump’s envoy and senior adviser, said on Monday, August 17 (26 Mordad), after meeting with Benjamin Netanyahu, the prime minister of Israel, that progress toward the disarmament of Hamas and advancing the Gaza peace plan may begin within a month.
Speaking to Fox News in Tel Aviv, Kushner said: “We might see progress within just 30 days... We hope that the process of collecting some of the weapons will begin, and also, you know, we hope that filling in some of the tunnels will start as well.”
According to the Axios website, a U.S. official also said that on Monday, Kushner told Netanyahu in a conversation that the United States wants Israel to test Hamas’s commitment to begin disarmament by taking “small steps” in Gaza.
These remarks come as, according to an Israeli official, Kushner and Netanyahu agreed that an American general would oversee and verify Hamas’s disarmament; because the Israeli prime minister emphasized that Israeli forces will not withdraw from Gaza until this is accomplished.
According to Axios, this “four-hour meeting,” while helping to resolve some misunderstandings, addressed a number of Netanyahu’s concerns and led to a shared understanding on how to continue along the path, but also made remaining disagreements clearer and showed how difficult it will be to achieve progress in the short term.
