US efforts to advance Gaza peace plan; Kushner met in Egypt with Hamas representatives

🔸International media reported that representatives of Donald Trump, the U.S. president, met in Egypt on Sunday, 25 Mordad, with officials of the extremist Hamas group and representatives of mediator countries, in order to advance the United States’ peace plan for Gaza.

🔸Reuters, citing a diplomat, reported that Jared Kushner, Trump’s envoy and his son-in-law, and Nikolai Mladenov, the envoy of the Trump peace team for Gaza, met in Cairo with Egyptian, Qatari and Turkish mediators, and Hamas officials were also present in some of these meetings.

🔸Also, sources familiar with the talks told AFP that Hamas officials met with Mr. Kushner in Egypt. The United States and the European Union have classified Hamas as a terrorist group.

🔸Citing its own sources, AFP reported that in the meeting Hamas once again emphasized its commitment to a Gaza peace agreement, while Kushner emphasized the complete and serious disarmament of Hamas and the end of any role for the group in governing Gaza in the future.

🔸A senior Israeli official also told Reuters that Kushner and Mladenov are expected to meet on Monday with Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel’s prime minister.

🔸On 18 Mordad, Netanyahu had said that Trump’s latest roadmap for establishing peace in Gaza was “unacceptable.”

🔸He also announced that the Israeli army would not withdraw “as long as Hamas has not actually been disarmed,” and would continue to counter threats against our forces and our citizens.
