The United Arab Emirates strongly condemned Iran’s attack on two oil tankers belonging to Abu Dhabi National Oil Company as they passed through the Strait of Hormuz.

In a statement released on Friday, the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the attack “constitutes a clear violation of UN Security Council Resolution 2817,” a resolution that emphasizes freedom of navigation and opposition to targeting commercial ships or disrupting international maritime routes.

The statement described the targeting of commercial shipping and the use of the Strait of Hormuz as a tool to exert pressure or “economic extortion” as “naval piracy by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and a direct threat to regional stability, its people, and the security of the world’s energy.”

The UAE had also reported on Sunday an attack by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps on one of its oil tankers.

These attacks involved no loss of life.
