The UN Security Council on Friday called for practical cooperation to implement an arms embargo on the Houthis and to prevent weapons and money from reaching the group. In a statement, the Security Council condemned the Houthis’ continued attacks on Saudi Arabia “in the most severe terms.”

According to the statement, members reaffirmed “the inherent right of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to defend itself in accordance with international law” and expressed their solidarity with Riyadh “against attacks that target civilians and civilian objects on the territory of this country.”

Council members also condemned attacks and threats against commercial shipping in the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, emphasizing that the Houthis must remain committed to international law and respect freedom of navigation.

The Houthi rebels in Yemen receive military, financial and arms support from the Islamic Republic of Iran. UN Security Council Resolution 2216 has imposed a targeted arms embargo on this group.
