🔻UN confirms receiving Iran’s letter of protest to “U.S. economic isolation operations”

Stephan Dujarric, a United Nations spokesperson, said that while confirming receipt of a letter from Abbas Araqchi, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is concerned that new actions and or provocative rhetoric related to the crisis in Iran will further intensify tensions, and urged all parties to pursue a political solution.

Mr. Dujarric told reporters that the assessment is that this standoff, even in these conditions in which it has been somewhat halted, is still causing significant harm to the region and the global economy.

He warned with regard to steps that could fuel further tensions, noting that the standoff continues to disrupt the process of supplying energy and foodstuffs.

He added that Mr. Guterres welcomes the mediation efforts of Qatar, Egypt, Pakistan and other countries aimed at reaching a political solution.

These remarks come amid ongoing concerns about the regional and economic impact of the deadlock related to Iran and increasing diplomatic efforts to prevent any renewed escalation of tensions.

Yesterday, Abbas Araqchi announced that he had written a letter to the UN Secretary-General and asked that the letter be circulated as an official document in the Security Council.

In the letter, the UN and the Security Council are asked to “ask the United States to immediately stop its threatening and coercive actions, designed to force third countries and their nationals to change their legally established relations and economic interests.”

Iran also asked the UN Secretary-General to assess and report the humanitarian consequences of these U.S. economic operations, including “their impact on civilians’ access to food, medicine, healthcare, energy, transportation, humanitarian aid, and other essential conditions for a decent life,” and to ensure that relevant evidence is independently assessed, documented, and preserved so it can be used for future accountability and responsibility.”
