🔻U.S. Navy aircraft transits the Taiwan Strait

The U.S. Navy’s Seventh Fleet says a maritime patrol aircraft “P-8A Poseidon” flew over the Taiwan Strait’s international airspace on Friday.

The U.S. Navy said in a statement to Reuters on Saturday: “The transit of this aircraft through the Taiwan Strait demonstrates the United States’ commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific region.”

The Taiwan Strait is one of the most sensitive flashpoints in tensions between the United States and China, and Beijing is particularly sensitive to the presence of U.S. forces in the area.

The transit of a U.S. patrol aircraft through the strait is usually seen as Washington’s emphasis on freedom of navigation and flight in waters and international airspace.
