🔻Turkey’s president arrived in Azerbaijan to attend the “Victory Day” ceremony. This day in Azerbaijan is observed as the anniversary of victory in the war with Armenia.
The trip is taking place at a time when relations between the two close regional allies have, in recent weeks, faced unprecedented and openly visible tensions. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan hopes to reduce the differences between Ankara and Baku during this visit.
Azerbaijan’s president, Ilham Aliyev, received him with an official welcome. The two presidents are expected to take part in a joint press conference on Sunday afternoon.
The dispute between the two countries dates back to when the government of Azerbaijan, on September 21, banned in schools clothing that is inconsistent with secular education without directly referring to the hijab.
The decision prompted protests inside Azerbaijan and also drew criticism from Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party. One of the critics was Oğtay Saral, Mr. Erdoğan’s adviser, who urged Azerbaijani officials to lift this restriction.
