Turkey’s banking regulator has revoked the license for the central office branch of Iran’s Melli Bank in Istanbul. The decision was taken alongside an increase in U.S. sanctions pressure on Tehran, but in the notice published in Turkey’s official gazette, U.S. sanctions are not cited as the reason for the move.

According to Reuters, the notice published in Turkey’s official gazette on Saturday, September 19, announces the revocation of the operating license for “the central branch of Turkey’s Melli Bank in Istanbul, with headquarters in Tehran.” The news agency emphasized that the notice does not refer to actions by the United States or to specific operational problems at the bank.

The decision was also recorded on Friday in the list of resolutions of Turkey’s Banking Regulation and Supervision Agency, known as BDDK, and the title of this resolution specifically refers to the revocation of the license for Melli Bank’s central branch in Istanbul.
