Tom Barrack, U.S. Ambassador to Turkey:
In the early 2000s, there was a period of peace and cooperation between Israel and Turkey. And I hope that this situation will be repeated.
What we hear from the senior leaders of these countries is that, during an election period—which everyone is in—they are forced to take certain actions.
Prime Minister Netanyahu is heading toward October. He knows what his voters want.
President Erdoğan is also deciding when to hold a new election, or whether he is in an election cycle.
His people—an extremely strong, good, conservative, and non-fundamentalist Islamic community—have always been worried about Gaza.
