👈 The Washington Post:
U.S. military forces have withdrawn from their bases in Iraq. The withdrawal came after two decades of U.S. presence in the country, which led to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Iraqi civilians and thousands of American soldiers, and it has now placed an Iran that is injured but with growing influence at the center of the region’s future.
U.S. forces will continue their anti-ISIS operations from their bases in Jordan. This withdrawal, completed on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, marked the end of the 12-year mission of a U.S.-led coalition against ISIS. The last forces left the Erbil air base in the Kurdish region of northern Iraq.
The agreement was signed in 2024 during the Biden administration and carried out under the Trump administration. Iraq’s Prime Minister, Ali al-Zaydi, described it as ushering in a new phase of national sovereignty. Iran and its affiliated groups called the withdrawal a victory, while some experts warned about an increase in Iran’s influence and the possibility of ISIS being revived
