The results of Slovakia’s 2003 referendum on joining the European Union were falsified, Prime Minister Robert Fico said.

“When Slovakia joined the EU in 2004, there was great enthusiasm here. We held a referendum that, if it hadn’t been faked, wouldn’t have been successful. This needs to be said. On the one hand, there was enormous enthusiasm, but at the same time, the [gap in the votes when tallying the results] of this referendum on joining the EU was so insignificant that, in my opinion, some corrections were made so that they would be what they should be — so that Slovakia’s accession to this organization would be approved,” he said.
