The New York Times reported on Monday, the fourth of Aban, that the U.S. Army, in a drill in Germany, trained Apache attack helicopter pilots to track and bring down drones similar to those made by Iran. The exercise was held to assess the effectiveness of Apache helicopters in countering drone threats in new wars.
According to the New York Times, Apache helicopters from the U.S. Army’s 2nd Battalion, 159th Attack Squadron (2-159) tracked the propeller-driven “Ootla” drones during the “Sky Falcon 2” exercise at the Grafenwoehr training center in Germany.
The wingspan of these drones is about 3.35 meters, which is almost comparable to the long-range attack drones “Shahed” used by Iran and Russia.
The newspaper wrote that despite their relatively low speed and simple design, the Shahed drones have been able to evade U.S. air defense systems and have been responsible for nearly all human casualties of U.S. forces up to this point in the war with Iran.
U.S. military officials say Apache could be part of a set of counter-drone systems.
