The 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine winners were announced today in Stockholm. The prize was jointly awarded to Carl Deisseroth of the United States and Peter Hegmann and Georg Nagel of Germany for the discovery of light-controlled ion channels and the development of optogenetic methods. This method allows scientists to turn the activity of nerve cells in the living brain on or off using light. The Nobel Prize winners in Physics, Chemistry, Literature, and Peace will also be announced in the coming days.
