Tensions between the two Koreas escalated after North Korea’s letter to the UN Security Council and the observation of a self-propelled gun near the border.
On October 26, Reuters confirmed the presence of a North Korean artillery piece in view and close to the border. Yonhap described the weapon as a 122-millimeter self-propelled gun and said its deployment was unprecedented.
Reuters reported the deployment of three armored vehicles from North Korea with their barrels facing south and 20 to 30 soldiers carrying out a fortification within a civilian area.
The Korean Central News Agency said that in a letter dated October 28, North Korea’s representative to the United Nations accused South Korea of abusing the mine incident that occurred in late August.
The response letter came from South Korea the previous week, which described the explosion of August 30 as the work of North Korean forces and as a violation of the armistice agreement of the Korean War. The explosion injured three soldiers.
The United Nations Command said the mine violated the armistice, and North Korea rejected responsibility for it.
