Romania’s Ministry of Defense said its air force shot down two drones over the country’s territorial waters in the Black Sea on Saturday.

In a statement, the ministry said two Romanian F-16 fighter jets, after radar detection, tracked the drones with a few minutes’ interval. Romania’s Ministry of Defense described the drones as an offensive jet type from the Gern family, a type Russia has used in the war in Ukraine.

The incident came after a series of drone attacks on commercial ships off the Romanian and Bulgarian Black Sea coasts. In these attacks, several ships sank, several people were killed, and some crew members went missing.

Romania and Bulgaria, both NATO members, have blamed Russia and have asked their allies for more air defense systems and anti-drone equipment.

The senior NATO commander in Europe said last week that Europeans should increase their support for Ukraine.
