QatarEnergy has signed an annual purchase contract for 3 million tons of liquefied natural gas from the company “Woodside,” which operates in the U.S. state of Louisiana. The contract is for 20 years and will be implemented from the beginning of the next decade.
Last week, QatarEnergy also signed a similar deal to purchase 4 million tons of LNG annually with the company “Cheniere” from the U.S. states of Louisiana and Texas.
QatarEnergy’s chief executive says the move is part of the company’s trading strategy to earn revenue from a probable increase in gas prices in the event of disruptions to exports from the Strait of Hormuz.
The contract terms also show that pricing will be based on the “Henry Hub” gas index in the United States, which is usually lower than gas prices at similar hubs in Europe and Asia, and during critical times the price difference increases sharply.
QatarEnergy can also partially fulfill its LNG sales obligations to its customers despite disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz by the Islamic Republic by purchasing U.S. LNG. Qatar was the world’s third-largest supplier of LNG last year.
