Morad Vaisi, senior analyst at Iran International, said: “It is very difficult for Masoud Pezeshkian to be able to meet with Donald Trump on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meeting, because in the power structure of the Islamic Republic, the president does not have the authority to make such a decision, and this permission was not granted previously either to Mohammad Khatami or Hassan Rouhani. Even in the most critical circumstances, decisions about meeting and negotiations with the United States are not under the president’s authority, and any contact with American officials would face a severe reaction from Ali Khamenei.”
