Macron says 'terrorist and racist' attack in Paris marks 'turning point'
French President Emmanuel Macron on Friday described a shooting in Trappes, near Paris, as a terrorist and racist attack that marks a turning point for the republic.
"What happened today marks a turning point for the republic and our country. What happened today was a terrorist and racist attack," Macron told reporters during a visit to the town hall, saying the victims were targeted solely because of their religion and the colour of their skin.
A gunman suspected of Islamophobic motives opened fire from a car west of Paris, killing one person and wounding four others, including a 12-year-old girl. Officials said the 39-year-old suspect fired an automatic weapon at a petrol station, a medical centre and a children's playground.
Macron said such acts have no place in France and urged people not to be pitted against one another. "The republic is one and indivisible," he said.
