Leaders of four opposition parties to Benjamin Netanyahu agreed in a meeting on Tuesday that they would immediately begin negotiations to form a national government coalition, but the path to achieving parliamentary majority remains unclear.

Gadi Eisenkot, leader of the Yesh Atid party, Naftali Bennett, leader of the Yamina party, Yair Golan, leader of the Democrats party, and Avigdor Lieberman, leader of Israel Beitenu, said in a joint statement that they would act to replace Benjamin Netanyahu’s government with a national emergency government.

Despite the loss of the Netanyahu coalition’s parliamentary majority in last week’s election, the four Jewish opposition parties have only 48 seats, while the Netanyahu coalition won 53 seats.

To form a majority, these parties need the support of two Arab parties with a total of 19 seats, but most of them have rejected the participation of Arab parties in a government coalition.

The opposition leaders also agreed to support Gadi Eisenkot in receiving the first mandate to form the government from Isaac Herzog, the President of Israel.
