Israel and the United States successfully conducted a planned test of the Arrow missile defense system in central Israel.

The test comes amid ongoing tensions with the government of Iran and is part of a multi-year program to strengthen capabilities to counter long-range ballistic missiles.

The Israeli Missile Defense Organization and the U.S. Missile Defense Agency led the test with the participation of the Israeli Air Force and aerospace industries.

Officials did not announce technical details or the type of interceptor that was launched, but Israel’s Ministry of Defense said the new test was carried out to assess technologies designed against current and future threats in the region.

The Arrow system includes Arrow 2 and Arrow 3 interceptors and makes up the highest layer of Israel’s air and missile defense network.
