Iraq’s prime minister’s office says it is in «direct talks with the American side to exempt some Iraqi airports» from the new sanctions on Iran’s airlines.
In the latest round of sanctions that the United States has recently implemented, it has threatened to sanction airports that host or provide services for flights by Iranian airlines. As a result, many Iran airline flights to neighboring countries, including Iraq, have been suspended in the past few days.
In a statement published on Saturday, Iraq’s prime minister’s office pointed out that the purpose of these talks is to obtain a waiver that «would enable the resumption of air travel for humanitarian purposes, which include treatment, education, religious pilgrimages, and matters related to citizens.»
The statement added: «While working to reduce tensions in the region, the Iraqi government emphasizes that the continuation of crises makes the situation more complicated.»
