The Interior Ministry spokesperson says Iran’s demand in the current indirect negotiations is the United States’ return to the Islamabad agreement

🔸The Interior Ministry spokesperson says Tehran’s goal in the ongoing indirect negotiations is to bring the United States back to the agreement reached in Islamabad.

🔸Ali Zeynivand said on Saturday, 28 Shahrivar, that various countries are still trying to mediate between Iran and the United States, and that Tehran’s position is that the United States must “adhere” to the agreement it signed.

🔸He added: “Our demand is for the other side to return to this same agreement, and we state this position explicitly in the negotiations.”

🔸Zeynivand also said that Masoud Pezeshkian’s presence in India and Kyrgyzstan, and on the sidelines of the Shanghai and BRICS meetings, “has provided a very effective platform for consultations.”

🔸Iran and the United States signed a 14-point memorandum of understanding in Islamabad on 28 Khordad to stop the war and begin negotiations over a broader agreement, but less than three weeks later, after three commercial ships were targeted in the Strait of Hormuz and following widespread U.S. attacks on Iran in response, that understanding effectively collapsed.

🔸In recent weeks, officials of the Islamic Republic have shown reluctance to resume talks with the United States, but Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian has recently said that if the United States returns to the Islamabad memorandum, Tehran is also willing to restart its commitments.

🔸These remarks come as some officials and military and security institutions, including Mohsen Rezai, secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, have said: “As long as Iran’s conditions are not met, there will be no negotiations.”

🔸Hosein Mahbi, the spokesperson for the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, had also announced on 19 Shahrivar Iran’s conditions for stopping the war as “the cessation of attacks and threats by the United States, the withdrawal of Israel’s army from southern Lebanon, the release of $24 billion in blocked Iranian assets, and non-interference in Iran’s nuclear and missile capabilities.”
