Ettela’at newspaper turned 100 years old. Amid the clamor of war, political crises, economic problems, and the routine struggles of everyday life, this news got lost. Newspapers limited themselves to a few articles and brief notes; Ettela’at itself published a special issue, but it even failed to address it on its front pages, and preferred to focus its main attention on the funeral ceremonies of Ali Khamenei.

The centenary of one of Iran’s oldest and most influential media outlets arrived and passed so quietly that it was as if no major event had taken place. As if the name “Ettela’at” were not intertwined with an important part of the history of Iran’s press.

For today’s generation, and for many newspaper readers, Ettela’at is like a large ship out at sea, its sails furled, its anchor dropped deep into the water, and it only occasionally starts its engines to show that it is still alive. A newspaper that, for years now, has played the role of observer and narrator of events instead of creating a current, driving narratives, and delivering first-hand accounts of news. But this is only one side of the coin.
