Donald Trump, the U.S. president, announced on Saturday that Audi plans to build a $4 billion assembly plant in the state of Georgia, producing 200,000 SUVs annually.

Trump delivered the news at an election rally in Perry, near Macon in central Georgia. Volkswagen’s luxury subsidiary is building its first assembly plant in the United States right here.

At the event, Grner Duesn?er, CEO of Audi, said: “We want to bring our biggest and most luxurious SUVs and produce them here in Macon, Georgia. This is a long-term investment because we believe in the U.S. market.”

Trump’s tariffs last year cost Audi €1.2 billion, equivalent to $1.4 billion. Audi imports all of its vehicles for the U.S. market from Europe or Mexico.
