The U.S. president had previously said that negotiations began at the request of the Islamic Republic, and that the main goal of the United States is to permanently prevent the Iranian government from obtaining a nuclear weapon. U.S. officials have also emphasized that freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz is one of the main axes of these talks.

The remarks are published as senior U.S. administration officials, including Marco Rubio, the foreign minister, and Scott Bessent, the Treasury secretary, have also announced progress in the negotiations, while emphasizing that a final agreement has not yet been reached.
