Democratic and Republican lawmakers in the U.S. Senate criticized President Donald Trump’s directive to reduce joint drills with South Korea.

Senator Jack Reed, the senior Democrat on the Senate Armed Services Committee, called the move “illogical and rushed.”

Senator Mark Kelly, a Democrat on the Senate Armed Services Committee, also described the reduction in the scale of the exercises as “short-sighted and wrong.”

Senator Andy Kim, a Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said linking the drills to Seoul’s refusal to take part in the war in Iran reflects a worrisome approach toward one of America’s key partners.

Senator Tom Tillis, a Republican member of the Senate, also said the decision could free thousands of North Korean troops to help Russia in the war in Ukraine.
