Claudia Tenney and Yasmin Ansari, members of the US House of Representatives, on Thursday introduced a bipartisan bill known as “Iran” to strengthen Iranians’ access to free internet and to counter censorship, surveillance, and the cutting of internet access by the government.
Tenney’s office said the bill would require the US government to periodically review its Iran Internet Freedom strategy, assess how it is implemented, and report to Congress.
The bill also calls for examining technologies such as private virtual networks, decentralized networks, and peer-to-peer communications, as well as direct satellite communications to mobile phones.
Under the bill, cyber-security training and access to secure digital tools for journalists, human-rights defenders, and civil society activists will also be expanded.
Tenney said the Iranian government uses censorship, surveillance, and internet shutdowns to maintain power.
Ansari also said unrestricted access to the internet “can really help people immediately,” describing the bill as bipartisan and “lacking military involvement.”
