«Capitalism is a system designed by the class that owns wealth and property to exploit the rest of us for its own profit. We must replace it with democratic socialism; a system in which ordinary people, at their workplaces, in their neighborhoods, and in society, have the right to express their views and a real role in decision-making.»
This is an argument made on the website of the organization “Democratic Socialists of America,” known as the “DSA.” It is a left-leaning movement which, since 2018, has been increasingly gaining importance and political influence in a country that is considered the heart of global capitalism.
“DSA” was formed in the 1970s through the merger of several smaller organizations with leftist tendencies, and for a long time it remained an almost marginal movement, until Berni Sanders’ 2016 presidential campaign, the independent candidate, changed the way many Americans viewed the concept of socialism.
Since then, the movement’s popularity has grown.
In the midterm elections on November 3 this year—during which one third of the Senate and all seats in the House of Representatives are up for election—the organization “Democratic Socialists of America” hopes to become a force that can influence the decisions and direction of the Democratic Party, especially in how to deal with the final two years of Donald Trump’s presidency.
