Canada 'Most European non-European country' as Carney meets EU

Leaders from Canada and the European Union met on Friday to agree a series of deals, from critical minerals to artificial intelligence, designed to take their ties to an unprecedented level. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa are meeting Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in Montreal on the second day of a summit.

Carney said Brussels and Ottawa faced "a rupture in the global system." Both have been hit by tariffs and territorial threats since Donald Trump's return to the White House.

An agreement allowing the European Investment Bank to back Canadian critical mineral projects is expected, along with a digital trade deal. Europe will also open its supercomputing infrastructure to Canadian researchers, industry and start-ups.
