Can AI predict cancer survival using a selfie?

A custom-built AI system that can predict a cancer patient’s chances of survival from a single photograph of their face has been developed in Massachusetts.

The system, developed by nonprofit academic healthcare system Mass General Brigham, was trained on data from more than 40 million facial photographs.

Project author Raymond Mak, a radiation oncologist, said: “Our goal is to make face photograph-based health assessment more quantitative, consistent and scalable so it can support personalized treatment decisions rather than replace physician judgment.”

The research has been published in the Lancet Digital Health journal.
