‘When the river is turbulent, the fishermen profit’: Police clash with Madrid strikers

Police clashed with protesters at Madrid's Complutense University on Wednesday as teachers rallied in Puerta del Sol, launching an indefinite strike.

Strike turnout among the region's 65,000 teachers was reported at 44.6% by the regional government and 70% by the Comisiones Obreras union.

Unions are demanding an extra €600 ($667) monthly, reduced teaching hours, and smaller classes, with teacher Isabel Sanz noting that Madrid teachers are the lowest-paid despite high living costs.

Francisco Martín, the central government's representative in Madrid, requested an urgent investigation into the police actions, calling the clash images "very harsh".
