🔶 Abd al-Saeed’s victory, the Democratic nominee, in the state of Michigan

Abd al-Saeed, the Democratic Party nominee, defeated Mike Rogers, the Republican nominee, by winning 52 percent of the votes in one of the important and closely contested election races in the U.S. state of Michigan.

This contest, among the most controversial in this round of midterm elections, was accompanied by allegations and controversy over Al-Saeed’s family and religious background. He was repeatedly targeted and criticized because of his lineage and religion, including by Donald Trump, the President of the United States.

Born and raised in the state of Michigan, Al-Saeed began his political activity during the Flint city water contamination crisis in the state between 2014 and 2019. In his election campaign, he focused on increasing access to healthcare services by reducing treatment costs, raising taxes on billionaires, and expanding housing construction for low-income and middle-income families.

This victory made him the first Muslim to reach the U.S. Senate.

The election contest between the Democratic and Republican candidates in Michigan has been assessed as one of the most expensive races in the history of U.S. Senate elections. During the race, tens of millions of dollars were spent by wealthy financial backers of both parties to support their candidates.
