🔶 Burnham: Strong indications of the Islamic Republic’s role in the Fireford base incident

Andy Burnham, the UK prime minister, says there are “strong indications” that Iran played a role in an incident near the airbase at Fireford in Gloucestershire—an incident in which five men were detained as part of a counterterrorism investigation.

At the end of the Labour Party conference in Liverpool, Burnham said that because the police investigation is continuing, he cannot provide more details, but added that the UK government’s belief is that the Iranian government had a role in the incident.

In an interview with the BBC, he said: “There are strong indications that Iran played a role in what happened at the Fireford airbase over the weekend; but of course this is still an ongoing, complex, and serious police investigation.”

In the past, the Fireford base has been used by US aircraft for missions in the war against the Islamic Republic.

Meanwhile, Marco Rubio, the US secretary of state, had previously said that Washington believes that “a foreign actor” played a role in the incident.
