Local officials in Hormozgan province begin investigations into cause of death of whale whose carcass was seen on Charak coasts

Local officials in Hormozgan province have said that they have begun investigations into the cause of death of a whale whose body was observed on the shores of Charak.

A wildlife expert from the General Department of Environmental Protection of Hormozgan said on Sunday—22 Shahrivar—to ISNA: “Preliminary estimates indicate that the carcass belongs to the ‘Bryde’s Whale’ (Bryde’s Whale). So far, the definite cause of the whale’s death has not been determined and it requires expert investigations and an autopsy; however, in past records, the most frequent causes of death and of this species beaching in the southern waters have been entanglement/stranding, and collision with the propellers of motor vessels and heavy ships passing through.”

Although, due to military clashes between the United States and Iran in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, the movement of commercial ships has decreased significantly in recent months, environmental activists have expressed concern about increased environmental pollutions resulting from attacks on oil tankers as well as explosions caused by military operations in this region.
