Alpine glaciers melting at significant pace, as August was world's hottest month

Copernicus, the Earth observation component of the European Union's Space programme reports August 2026 was the world's joint hottest month on record alongside July 2023, pushing global temperatures over 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

Experts report this summer was among the warmest in recorded history, with temperatures exceeding the 150-year average by over 3°C.

In Italy's Lombardy Alps, extreme temperatures are accelerating glacial loss. One glacier shrank by 31 meters this year. If a glacier lacks protective residual winter snow, it becomes fully exposed and prevents future ice from forming.

Vanda Bonardo, president of International Commission for Alps protection noted that "This year we have been more deeply affected by the climate crisis than in previous years…(and) an increase in extreme weather events…"
