The X network removed access in Turkey over the past week to nearly 500 accounts belonging to journalists, economists and university professors.
According to Bloomberg, citing Englishweb, a project that monitors internet censorship in Turkey, these restrictions were imposed after court orders invoking national security and public order. The X network has not announced the reason for this.
The move coincided with Turkey’s investment funds crisis. More than 100 funds have been wound up, and dozens of owners and company managers have been detained. Turkish authorities have recently launched an investigation into accounts that have been accused of spreading false information to influence financial markets.
Yaman Akdeniz, a co-founder of the Freedom of Expression Association, said: “This process is not transparent. In the past, blocking orders targeted a specific post, but now access to the entire account is being closed.”
