The videos released from Karbala show clashes during the Arbaeen ceremony between supporters of the Islamic Republic and followers of Ayatollah Sadiq Shirazi, a religious authority critical of the Islamic Republic. A group gathered in front of Ayatollah Sadiq Shirazi’s office, holding images of Ali and Mojtaba Khamenei and flags reading “Ya Latharat al-Husayn” and “Ya Latharat al-Khamenei,” and chanted against him; the action was met with a reaction from the supporters of this marja’ (source of emulation), leading to clashes. Iraqi police initially put an end to the clashes, but afterward tensions also arose between Islamic Republic supporters and Iraqi security forces, and security forces controlled the situation using force. According to published reports, 140 people were arrested and 54 were injured in these clashes.
