The U.S. Treasury Secretary, in an interview with the “CNBC” network, said that the recent threat by Donald Trump, the U.S. president, to carry out a broad military operation has created the conditions for direct talks with the Islamic Republic.

He expressed hope that these negotiations would lead to a reduction in tensions and a return to normal conditions in the region.

Bessent, referring to the consequences of the Strait of Hormuz remaining closed, said that hundreds and perhaps thousands of ships are still waiting to pass. He stressed that this situation has not only affected the oil market, but has also disrupted the transfer of chemical fertilizer, refined petroleum products, and industrial gases.

The U.S. Treasury Secretary added that one of the main focuses of the negotiations is to ensure freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. According to officials of the administration, the United States hopes that a potential agreement would guarantee the free passage of commercial vessels and prevent further escalation of maritime tensions.
