🔻U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the imposition of sanctions against the president and one of the senior lawyers of the International Criminal Court.
This latest move is part of the Trump administration’s efforts to “disable” the court; an institution that has been authorized by more than 120 countries to address war crimes. Rubio accused Tomoko Akane, the court’s president from Japan, and Abdullah Saie, the senior lawyer of trials at the court, of having participated—while investigations, detention, or legal proceedings were being pursued—in actions involving officials whose governments have not accepted the International Criminal Court’s jurisdiction.
The sanctions include asset freezes, travel bans, and restrictions on receiving services from American companies.
Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected allegations related to war crimes and accused this court of having anti-Semitic motives.
Neither the United States nor Israel is a member of the International Criminal Court.
