🔺The United States is trying to restore Russian gas exports to Europe

◾ The United States supports the rapid return of Russian natural gas sales to Europe via pipelines that pass through Ukrainian territory, in order to obtain an energy ceasefire before winter.

◾ Citing statements by officials from three countries, The Wall Street Journal reported that U.S. envoys raised this idea during their September trips to Russia and Ukraine, and that Russian gas is expected to be sold through an American intermediary so that European sanctions are circumvented.

◾ According to the assessment of American negotiators, Russia’s return to the European gas market provides a strong incentive for Vladimir Putin to agree. Using the Soviet-era pipeline network also ensures Ukraine’s transit revenue.
