The United States intends to establish two military bases in this Arctic territory within the framework of a new security agreement with Denmark and Greenland.

According to Reuters, citing three informed sources, Washington is set to reactivate the Cold War-era base in Narsarsuaq in southern Greenland and also establish a military presence in Mestersvig on the east coast.

The population of Narsarsuaq has fallen to a few dozen people since the closure of the U.S. base in the 1930s. Mestersvig is currently under the control of Denmark’s special forces unit.

The agreement is scheduled to be signed on Tuesday on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.

Based on reports, the agreement bars non-NATO countries—especially China and Russia—from deploying military forces in Greenland and from undertaking sensitive investment in vital mineral resources.

U.S. President Donald Trump had said on Friday that this agreement would give the United States “permanent security control” of Greenland.

During the Cold War, the United States had 17 bases with more than 10,000 troops in Greenland. The Pituffik space base, with about 150 U.S. personnel, is currently the country’s only active base in Greenland.
