Lithuania plans to harden a key power substation near the Russian border against attacks by military drones.

Andrius Smškovićius, CEO of the Lithuanian electricity grid company, told Reuters that the plan to build the Geležai substation includes a blast-resistant barrier against a bomb-laden truck, tunnel-detection sensors, and concrete coverage for transformers.

He said: “We are protecting ourselves against several ‘witness’ drones that can land with 100 kilograms of explosives.” Russia uses the Shahed drones, designed by the Islamic Republic, to attack Ukraine.

The substation will be built 30 kilometers west of Kaliningrad and its cost is at least 48 million euros higher than the previous estimate.
