🔸The International Criminal Court, which was targeted by U.S. government sanctions due to issuing an arrest warrant for Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, has become the winner of the Sakharov Prize for 2026, which is the European Union’s most important human-rights award.

🔸The award is being given less than two weeks after the administration of Donald Trump announced new sanctions against the International Criminal Court.

🔸The International Criminal Court, which is responsible for investigating allegations against individuals regarding war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide, has long faced opposition from the U.S. government.

🔸Tarané and Romina Rahimi, the 21-year-old Iranian twin sisters, were among this year’s nominees for the Sakharov Prize.

🔸These two sisters have been sentenced to execution and 25 years in prison, respectively, for participating in anti-government protests in Dey 1404.
