South Korea’s presidential office, in response to President Donald Trump’s decision to reduce the annual joint drills, said it will hold talks with Washington on military cooperation related to Iran and the Strait of Hormuz.
In a statement, the agency said: “The government has actively participated in discussions with the international community for a ceasefire in Iran and to restore free passage through the Strait of Hormuz.”
The statement added: “Taking into account various factors, including the readiness situation on the Korean Peninsula and domestic legal procedures, we are in close talks with the American side on practical and military ways to participate.”
Seoul’s claim comes as the U.S. president, in a message, announced an order to reduce joint maneuvers with South Korea and wrote that he had recently told the South Korean president whether he wanted to join the United States in “denuclearizing the Islamic Republic of Iran,” to which he responded: “No, thank you.”
