Russian Federal Security Service officers have detained a correspondent for the Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk bureau of Japan's Hokkaido Shimbun newspaper on suspicion of espionage on Sakhalin, the FSB's Public Relations Center reported.

The FSB said he was collecting and storing information on Russia's defense capabilities for transfer to Japan's intelligence service.
